Christmas Card Campaign 2024

This festive season, Effective Altruism Australia is excited to announce a new way to share the gift of effective giving: beautifully designed personalised Christmas cards.

When you make a donation to one of our partner programs in someone’s name, we’ll email you a personalised card that contains your message, your donation amount and its estimated impact via the program it supports, and an introduction to the power of effective giving.

Plus, each recipient of a gift donation will be offered the opportunity to double their first donation to a partner program by January 31, thanks to a generous matching commitment.

By gifting donations to your friends and family, you’re not just supporting those most in need with high-impact programs—you’re also spreading this life-changing work to others.

1. Instructions: Send a Gift Donation Christmas Card

Step 1.

Start your donation of any amount, being sure to select the “one time” option (not “monthly”). If you’d like the card to describe the tangible impact of your donation, please select “These specific charities” and allocate the entire donation to one program. If you decide to select “The most effective charities” or if you allocate across multiple charities, a card with a generic message about the impact of supporting effective charities will be generated for you.

For previews of the cards or to view the cost per intervention and estimated impact of certain donation sizes, please see the table below.

Step 2.

Tick “Yes” under “Are you making this donation as a gift for the festive season?” at the bottom of the form. You’ll then be able to enter the recipient’s details and a personal message to the recipient. Then click “Donate.”

Step 3.

Within 5 minutes, you will receive the personalised digital card by email, for you to send to the recipient digitally or print out at your own convenience.

Important: EAA will not distribute the card to the recipient—this is up to you to do! However, we will send the recipient a one-time confirmation email between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve confirming the donation in their name and sharing information about effective giving and our match offer for first-time donors.

Wish to give out 10 or more cards? For batches of 10 or more—such as for your extended family or your team at work—please donate the total sum via one transaction. Please do not tick the gift box; instead email info@eaa.org.au with the recipient names (and, if relevant, donation amounts) with the subject line “Batch card donation.”

2. FAQs

Why do you ask for the recipient’s email address?
This enables us to send the recipient a one-time confirmation email (between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve) confirming the donation in their name and sharing information about effective giving and our match offer for first-time donors. We will not send them further communication unless they actively opt-in.

Are the cards program-specific?
Yes, if you select “These specific charities” and allocate the entire donation to one program, we will email you a card describing that program and the estimated impact of your donation, accompanied by a captioned image of a recipient. If you decide to select “The most effective charities” rather than a specific program, or if you allocate across multiple charities, a card with a generic message about the impact of supporting effective charities will be generated for you.

I can’t find my card, where is it?
Your personalised card will be emailed to you within 5 minutes—please check your spam or junk folder, or filtered inbox. If you still can’t find it, please email info@eaa.org.au

Batches: what if I want to give out 10 or more cards?
For batches of 10 or more—such as for your extended family or your team at work—please donate the total sum via one transaction. Please do not tick the gift box; instead email info@eaa.org.au with the recipient names (and, if relevant, donation amounts) with the subject line “Batch card donation.” This option is available until 5pm 23rd December 2024.

There is an error on my card, how do I fix it?
Send us an email at info@eaa.org.au with the subject line “Christmas Card Support” and a description of the changes you’d like made, and we’ll organise a new card for you.

Are my donations for the giving season still tax-deductible?
Yes, but only for the donor. Making a donation in someone’s name is still treated as a regular, tax-deductible donation, and the donor will receive an email (separate to the Christmas card email) with a receipt for tax purposes. The Christmas card recipient cannot claim a deduction.

Will I receive a receipt?
Yes, your recipient will be emailed separately to the Christmas card. If the donation is made in late December, it may take up to 5 days to reach your inbox.

What if I donate to Effective Altruism Australia Environment?
For this initial 2024 Christmas campaign, cards are only available for global health and wellbeing programs, not for EAAE’s environment option.

3. What will the card contain?1

Each card contains your personal message, your donation amount and its estimated impact, and a brief description of the life-changing program it will support. It also introduces the recipient to effective giving, and offers them a QR code to learn more and double their first donation.

Here you can browse templates for each card, and below you’ll find key details on each intervention as represented in the cards, to assist you in deciding on a program selection and donation amount.
