Workplace Giving
Workplace giving (or payroll giving) is a streamlined way to give via Effective Altruism Australia and Effective Altruism Australia Environment directly from your salary.
For Employees: The Tax Advantage
The primary benefit of workplace giving is the immediate tax impact. Because your donation is deducted from your pre-tax income, your employer can reduce the tax withheld from your pay on the spot¹.
-
- Instant Benefit: You can receive the tax deduction in every pay cycle rather than waiting until the end of the financial year to claim it back.
- Simple Record Keeping: You don’t need to track individual tax receipts. Under ATO rules, a record of the total amount donated on your annual Income Statement (formerly Payment Summary) or your payslips is sufficient for your tax records².
For Employers: Building a High-Impact Culture
Implementing a workplace giving program is a low-cost, high-impact way to enhance your Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and staff engagement.
Research from Workplace Giving Australia highlights several key benefits for businesses:
-
- Attraction & Retention: 85% of employees believe it is important for their company to have a workplace giving program in place³. Furthermore, 34% of workers are more likely to stay with an employer who actively supports the community⁴.
-
- Culture & Reputation: 70% of the workforce believe that involvement in workplace giving has a positive effect on organisational culture⁵. Furthermore, 62% would be more likely to recommend an employer that is a leader in corporate philanthropy⁶.
- Matching Impact: Many employers choose to match staff donations dollar-for-dollar. This not only doubles the impact of the gift but is also a tax-deductible business expense for the company.

Footnotes
-
- Immediate Tax Benefit: The ATO allows employers to reduce the amount of tax withheld from your pay to account for your donation. However, this is at the discretion of the employer and may depend on their specific payroll software capabilities. If your employer does not reduce withholding, you still receive the full tax benefit when you lodge your annual tax return.
-
- Record Keeping: The ATO states that you do not need to keep individual receipts for donations made through workplace giving. Your employer will instead provide a summary of your total donations for the financial year via your annual Income Statement (formerly a payment summary), a letter, or an email. For more details, see the ATO’s guidance on workplace giving.
