The 10% Pledge

Across Australia and around the world, thousands of people have already pledged to give more effectively.

You can too.

Everyday Australians building a fairer world

When you care about making a difference in the world, it’s natural to ask: “Where can my donations do the most good?”

However, not all charities are created equal, and some can be significantly more effective than others. By adopting the principles of effective altruism, you can ensure that your donations have the maximum possible impact on the lives of those in need.

Independent evaluators such as GiveWell routinely find 10–100x differences between a typical charity and the most effective ones.

Why take the 10% pledge?

The 10% Pledge is a personal commitment to donate at least 10% of your income to the charities you believe can create the greatest positive impact. It isn’t legally binding, it’s a clear expression of your values and a long-term promise to help others as effectively as you can.

Since 2009, over 10,000 people in 100+ countries have pledged through Giving What We Can, donating $490M+ to life-saving charities. Through EAA, Australians can take the pledge and support Australian-registered, evidence-backed global health charities.

The opportunity for Australians

Your income goes further than you think

Most Australians are among the world’s highest earners. That means the resources we can spare have an outsized ability to improve lives – especially in places where even a small amount of money can achieve remarkable results.

Does 10% feel like too much right now?

You can begin with a Trial Pledge, choosing your own percentage and timeframe to see how it feels in practice. This lets you explore effective giving at a pace that works for you before making a long-term commitment.

A personal commitment to give at least 10% of your income to the organisations you believe can most effectively help others. It’s not legally binding, but it is a thoughtful, long-term promise.

No. The pledge is about giving 10% across your working life. Some years you may give more, others less — your overall commitment is what matters. A pledge dashboard helps you track your progress.

A flexible way to start. You choose your own percentage and timeframe — from six months to five years — to explore what effective giving looks like for you.

Yes. You can pledge now, with the commitment beginning once you have a stable income. In the meantime, many students give 1% to build the habit.

No. You can give to any organisations you judge to be most impactful. Many pledgers choose charities recommended by evaluators such as GiveWell, but the decision is entirely yours.
